Lost and Found (A Father's Love)!

This is one of the latest pictures we have of our "Baby Shane" before he died. As usual we will try to celebrate his life today, even though the sorrow of his loss hangs in the balance. There will be tears and laughter, but most of all, a longing for what will be. Though it seems as though so much has been lost, there has been so much found. We lost the love of a tiny, precious life which trusted us with all his life. We found the love of our Savior, who knows our pain and sends us glimpses of His tender mercies, even in our most lonely hours. We lost the ability to provide love and care for our baby boy, but found an increased ability to love and care for others and understand loss.
We lost the chance to ever really get a good family picture, but found a great appreciation that Crystal felt inspired to take Shane for pictures just days before his passing.
We lost a lifetime of memories of brothers playing together and loving each other, but acting like they can't stand each other at other times. We found an opportunity to teach our children about our Heavenly Father's plan, and that they will see their brother again someday if they live worthy. This has been especially important to Connor, as Shane was "his" baby. One day shortly before Shane passed, he asked mommy "Can I hold Shane, because I haven't held him in like 20 years or something?" Who knows, maybe it will only be 20 years or something when he will be able to hold him again along with us. Only the Lord knows. He will never hold him again as an innocent child but being able to hold that pure resurrected baby as a man will have its own specialness.
We lost a member of our eternal family, but found a greater appreciation for the sealing of families together forever. Our minds have been enlightened and our eyes opened to the merciful nature of the plan set forth. Even children not born into such a covenant will all have a chance to accept that sealing done in the temple someday, as though they had been born into the covenant. That is so merciful; so beautiful; such an expression of love.
As a father, I lost the chance to watch my little guy grow into a man, and hopefully embrace the Gospel, get the priesthood, serve a mission (as I did not), and marry in the temple. I found a gratitude for the chance I had for such a short time to care for and hold a tiny infant in my arms, who in reality was greater than I. Even in his short life, he brought more people into the Gospel and effected more lives than I could have ever done. His mother knew of his goodness long before his passing. She would tell him he was too good for this world. Crystal is a spiritual giant herself, and truly has the gift of discernment.
This is a picture of our little guy exactly one week before he died. We were at the temple for the second Saturday in a row, but I believe the Lord inspired us to be strengthened before the storm. The time I spent in the temple prior to his death left an impression on me that helped pull me through those early very hard days. I still cannot forget the feelings I had in the temple that time.
Again, we lost a member of our eternal family, but found members of our family finding their way into the church and just recently into the temple themselves. We received a letter from Shane's uncle Antonio (whose birthday is on the day Shane died) that expressed the impact our little angel had on his life and conversion.
The boys all found new friends the day their aunt and uncle came to visit. They were not going to come since they were in Pittsburgh on vacation, but at the last minute made the trip and got to see Shane just 3 days before he died. Aiden loves his uncle Antonio.
Connor fell in love with his aunt Sunny. Looking back, we can see just how little Connor and Aiden still were. They have grown so much over the last couple of years and we hope they will come out of this stronger and more faithful, without damaging emotional scars.
We said our last goodbyes on April 6th. The timing of it all could not have been by chance. So many significant events have happened on that day. It was Good Friday. It was a reminder of the hope of the Resurrection.
We held our baby boy's body, and that is exactly what it felt like; a body. It is amazing what the spirit does to change things.
It was different. He no longer had that "breath of life" spoken of in the scriptures that was given to Adam to make him come to life. Saying goodbye was hard, but looking back, it has helped us to heal.
The first song on our playlist is one that Crystal found and I would say is the wish of both of our hearts. I have not had any witnesses of him and the life hereafter. Crystal has more faith for those types of things. I have had to rely on my faith on the words of prophets and apostles, and the witness of the spirit that they are true. The other songs on there are some that we have grown to love and have found new meaning after the experience in our life. The last song was a last minute addition that for me explains my feelings about my Savior. I need Him! I love Him! I hope I will be found worthy with Him as my advocate to live with Him again, and dwell where our little one now dwells above. A father's love never dies. It is patient and hopeful. It is always growing. It was about this time (around 10am - 2yrs ago) on the morning Shane died that I last saw him alive. I was putting him down for a nap, and he gave me one last big smile. As time fades, the image fades with it, but I will never forget the feeling. It was like he was leaving me one last gift. I held Shane for the last time as a lifeless body, though I'm sure his spirit was close by. When I hold him again it will be as this picture above, full of life, and I will have found what was lost for just a season of eternity. And then, there will be nothing lost again, only new things to find as we progress with perfected bodies. I pray that I will live worthy of that day. We miss you and send you our love, our sweet Baby Shane!

Lovely Lydia

Lydia had her 2 month check up yesterday--aside form the dreadful shots that left her screaming and then whimpering through the remainder of the day, we found that she is still a BIG girl!  You can tell by looking at her that she is abnormally long, and for a 5'2" Mommy, that is quite strange! She measured in at 24 and 3/4 inches--yep, she's not even in the charts!!!  She weighed 12 pounds, definitely in the charts there (about 75th percentile).  Why do we Mommies glory in telling everyone how big our babies are?  Perhaps because of the miracle that allows her to grow so strong and healthy, and the honor we have in watching them grow day by day!  What a precious gift!

Voila!

Over fourteen hand quiltting hours, thousands of stitches, and a heart full of love later, here it is!  Miss Lydia is now the sweet little owner of her first quilt.  I am certain there will be many more, but for now...voila!

Angels

Two posts in one night?  Well, Miss Lydia is awake on my lap and I am enjoying her looking up at me, smiling and cooing, so I had to post some pics of my angels!  They are angels...most of the time anyhow!

What Are YOU Grateful For?

Tonight Connor prayed in complete honesty and sincere thought...
"Heavenly Father, I am grateful that when Daddy was at first brushing my teeth tonight that it fell out, and it was all because I banged it with my knee when I was wrestling tonight.  In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen."
Gotta love the boys!  I love how he had to explain the wrestling to Heavenly Father--he spoke to the Lord like we all should, anxious to explain the events of the day!  He made me laugh so hard!
Now remember Aiden's fall in "The Bus Stop Chronicles"?  Well, I noticed his front tooth is turning blackish!  URGHH!!!  Either it's trying to heal or it's dying...thank goodness for baby teeth!
I spy with my "little" eye, a tiny gift from a BIG brother's heart!  Yep, while Miss Lydia slept, Aiden slipped a mini car next to her.  Perhaps she received the honor of the tiniest car we own because she is a babe!  Of course, it had to be Lightening McQueen--nothing but the best for a lovely girl!

Pirates We Be!

Okay, well sometimes we are angels....

But for the most part, PIRATES WE BE!  (Check out Aiden's face--classic!)
And so happy to be! (A pirate that is)
Yes, often we are ninjas....
And superheros.....
And for the record, we think we're #1!!!
Occasionally, we are the farmer's children....
And "tree huggers".....
Okay, we are not quite the "tree hugger" type.....
But officially, PIRATES WE BE!

For Time and All Eternity!

Beautiful Santana--
I sit here, on the day of your WEDDING, and think of the wonderful light you must be to all around you at this very moment. My phone had been charging through the morning, I turned it on, and found I had a message from you. I listened to your beautiful voice and felt so sad that I couldn't be right by your side, but so happy that both Sara and Sunny are with you in the temple, and Mom and Dad anxiously await you--the first to greet you, as you walk down those temple stairs and out into the world--a married woman! It is simply a miracle that both Sara and Sunny are right there with you, a miracle indeed. I remember sitting with you 8 years ago; We went to McDonalds (we had our fair share of fast food together!), and I told you all about the Plan of Salvation. Your eyes glowed with a mist of tears as I told you who you were and why you are here. You told me that you felt something different that day...and from then, you had determined your destiny! I have never seen someone take hold of the gospel as firmly and quickly as you did. Now, in your pure white gown, you venture into an AMAZING JOURNEY....it will be full of happiness with a hint of sorrow to teach you of the great blessing that it truly is! You are BEAUTY....you are JOY....you are a beaming LIGHT...you are a WOMAN, a WIFE, a DAUGHTER, someday a MOTHER, and always my SISTER!
I LOVE YOU!!!
Crystal

The Bus Stop Chronicles

I had to start with Miss Lydia again.  Isn't she adorable?  She is, after all, the center of our bus stop chronicles...without her, none of these stories would have come to pass!  Read on...

Mr. Aiden has a way of running around and making a mess of so many things; I'm trying to learn to let him be a boy--insisting that he stay a boy.  Sometimes...I forget.  We drove to the bus stop last week and waited in the car for Connor to arrive.  It was cold, and Lydia was crying, so I hopped out and hopped into the back seat with Mr. Aiden and my Little Miss.  I took her out of the car seat, talked with her, and looked at Aiden staring at me--fixated on my freckles.
Aiden: "Mom, where did you get those grey dots from?"
Me: "What grey dots honey?"(I knew precisely what he meant)
Aiden: "Those...there and there and there and there and..." (pointing dramatically all over my face and arms--ALL OVER!)
Me: "Oh, well, the sun kissed me!"
Aiden: (A goofy grin and roll of the eyes...he's all too smart at only 3 years old!  I believed my Mom when she told me that.  I think I was 8!  Naive?  Yep, and still am!)
Aiden then decides to hop into the front of the car, hop out of the drivers side door, leave it wide open, and run to the women and children across the street who were waiting for their kindergartners.  He spoke to the...women!  I reached down to open the back door and found myself locked inside...child safe locks.  I restrained from yelling him back into the car and rolled down the window casually, smiling all the while, and opened the door from the outside.  I was screaming inside, mentally!
And there's a busted lip from our most recent bus stop morning.  He was walking--balancing--on the curb, 10 feet away from me when I heard, "Crystal, he fell!"  I turned and saw a mother running to his aide.  I sighed and slowly walked towards him, ready to say, "Get up honey, you're fine!"  Then I saw his busted lip.  Instead, I said, "Looks like you're gonna' be okay!"  I am a mother to boys--lots of accidents and heart racing drama, I've become casual in my nurturing skills lately!
Now, Connor is a light..letting our family secrets loose!  I walked out the door yesterday morning with Lydia wrapped in a fleece blanket, pink fuzzy jammies and a cotton polka dot hat.  When I stepped outside, I sensed it was a bit cold for her, but it was enough of a job getting Connor out the door, and we had to make it to the bus on time.  I knelt down with Lydia at the bus stop so her brother's could talk to her--she smiled and babbled enough to lure a little Asian girl to her side and the attention of all the other little girls and their Mommies.  Connor announced aloud:
"When Mommy was saying the family prayer this morning, Lydia said her personal prayer--it was so funny!" (Lydia babbled through the prayer.)
I can only imagine their thoughts--Family prayer? Personal prayer? Lydia prays?  How many prayers do Mormons say?
We pray A LOT...I have to just to get through a day!
I then heard a woman say, "I would have bundled her up more!"  I was bright red, but my disheveled appearance spoke for my ill prepared morning!
And...an update on Steve.  This is how he studied for his last test.  The computer sat conveniently under the book for a mental break, TV remotes within hands reach, and my nap pillow from Christmas 2 years ago.  My mother in law insisted I would need it as I started my nursing clinical rotations.  Three semesters later, a miserable 1st and 2nd trimester (pregnancy), ** extra pounds, dark circles under my eyes, an overdue baby, and still more classes now and in the summer, AND I have yet to nap with that pillow and the convenient matching eye mask.  At least someone is enjoying it!

P.S.  Connor missed the bus this morning...thanks to a Mommy who hates alarms and a Daddy who loves to sleep!

Your Blessing....Our Blessing

Little Princessa (aka Miss Lydia, Little Miss, Pretty Liddy, etc.), you are our blessing!  Today she was blessed by her dear Daddy at church.  What a sacred thing, to hold his little girl in a circle of priesthood strength, to be given a name for this journey through life, and to shed a light on the precious little girl that I already know you are!   Lydia, in her pure white clothing, reminded me--again--of the best and most lasting things in life.  We woke today to snow--yep, beautiful white flurries falling down.  It is March 1st, the beginning of  a month filled with memories in our family.  On March 31st two years ago, we lived our last mortal moments with Baby Shane.  It was the 31st, the close of a month, the end of his precious life.  Today it is the 1st, a new month ahead, a new life to hold, another lasting March memory.  I don't know how, but the Lord brought snow for us on the day of Shane's funeral and viewing--a spring surprise.  I still am in awe over the Lord's love for us as He brought snow yet again.  Simple reminders, tender mercies, a beautiful little girl!  Aunt Sara made Miss Lydia her skirt--talented huh?  I don't know how she does it, but she has practiced on two beautiful girls for 5 years now!

Miss Lydia, you are almost unreal to me; what an honor it is to hold you, tend to your every care, teach you the virtue of being a daughter of God, and to watch you grow.  You are an angel.
Mommy
